To the southwest of Salt Lake and the west side of the Jordan River is a beautiful city which was settled in 1849 by a man named Joseph Harker. He being the first to cross to the west side of the large flowing river had much to discover. Soon after his crossing, many people followed and families started to build their lives and homes along the river and settle the area. They named the area West Jordan.
In 1853, the population of West Jordan was 361 individuals. As time moved on schools were opened and business were started. In 1867, the first signs of cooper and gold were found in some near by mines. At first the mines were the lowest grade of cooper found in the world, pretty much worth nothing. Today that same area has become one of the largest copper mines in the world and is known as Kennecott Copper.
Since 1853, not only has the city officially been established, the city has drastically grown to over 113,905 people. There are also over 350 acres of park properties, 25 public schools, and 3,014 businesses. The median household income is approximately $69,503 with over 55,000 employees.
